API 510 Study Guide: What to Read and in What Order

The API 510 study guide you need is a short list of documents read in a smart order, not one book. Start with the two API pages that define your exam, then work through the code and recommended practices in the order below. That order puts the most-used material first and keeps you from spending hours in sections that will not be on screen.

Start with the sheet, the Body of Knowledge and API 510

Step 1: the effectivity sheet and the Body of Knowledge. Before you buy or open anything, get the two documents API publishes for your window. The effectivity sheet names the edition of each publication and the sections available in the open-book part. The Body of Knowledge lists the topics the questions draw on. Our effectivity sheet guide and Body of Knowledge guide explain both. Wondering how demanding the exam is? See how hard the API 510 exam is.

Print or save them, mark your window and keep them beside your references. Every reading decision below comes back to these two pages.

Step 2: API 510 itself. API 510 organizes the exam, so read it first and most often. Walk through it in the order the Body of Knowledge uses: the calculation methods for thickness, corrosion rate, remaining life and interval, then inspection planning, repairs, alterations, rerating and pressure testing. The Body of Knowledge notes that the corrosion rate, remaining life and interval methods (paragraphs 7.1, 7.2, 7.4 and Section 6) may be closed-book, so learn them well enough to work without the book. The closed-book guide shows how.

Read it with a pencil. Write the paragraph number beside every method you practice.

Practice documents and damage mechanisms

Step 3: the inspection practice documents. Next come the recommended practices that describe how inspection is done. Take them in this order, by document number:

  • RP 572: inspection practices for pressure vessels, including vessel types and what to look for.
  • RP 576: inspection of pressure-relieving devices.
  • RP 577: welding inspection and metallurgy, which supports the welding review section.
  • RP 578: material verification programs.

You do not need to memorize them. Read each one once for structure, then return to the sections that match topics where your practice results show gaps. Check the effectivity sheet for any section limits and the Body of Knowledge notes on annexes.

Step 4: the damage mechanism reference. RP 571 is the reference for how equipment degrades. The effectivity sheet limits the open-book use to Section 2 and a listed set of paragraphs, so study those rather than the whole document. For each mechanism, write a short card with where it shows up, what causes it and how it is usually found. The damage mechanisms guide lists the paragraphs on the current sheet and gives you a head start on those cards.

ASME and PCC-2

Step 5: ASME Sections V, VIII-1 and IX. These three are large, and the effectivity sheet limits which parts count. Use article and paragraph numbers as your map:

  • Section V: the listed articles on examination methods. Learn what each method can and cannot find.
  • Section VIII, Division 1: the listed parts and appendices that support the calculations and construction rules.
  • Section IX: welding only, which supports the procedure and qualification review section.

Skip anything the sheet excludes. Then practice finding a given topic in the listed sections until it takes seconds, because these are the PDFs on screen in the afternoon.

Step 6: PCC-2 repair articles. ASME PCC-2 shows up for repairs. The effectivity sheet lists specific articles, so read those and not the whole standard. Focus on what each repair method is for and when it applies, which is the level exam questions tend to test. A one-line note per article, covering the repair type and the problem it solves, is enough to start.

Tabs, notes and what you can bring

You can mark up your study copies as much as you like, but nothing carries into the exam. Papers, notes and books are not allowed in the room, and the open-book part uses PDFs on the testing computer, with only the sections on your window's sheet available. The test center provides scratch paper and a pencil, and the screen provides a basic calculator.

So tabs and highlights are training tools. Use them to build speed, then practice finding the same sections without them, using the headings and numbering a PDF gives you. The open-book strategy guide shows a timed drill for exactly that.

Skip rehosted code books

Free copies of code books on random sites are tempting, but they may be the wrong edition, incomplete or posted without permission. They can send you to a rule that is not on your sheet. Stick to publications you license. Our free practice guide covers what API gives away, what to avoid and a weekly routine that uses only your own copies.

Once your documents are in order, the free 10-question check shows which areas to study first, so you know which document to open next.

FAQ

Which edition do I buy?

The one on the effectivity sheet for your exam window. The sheet lists API 510, the recommended practices, ASME and PCC-2 by edition, and the effectivity sheet guide shows how to check each one. Do not rely on the edition you use at work.

Do I need all the ASME sections?

You need Sections V, VIII Division 1 and IX, and only the parts listed on the sheet. Section IX is welding only. Buy or access the full publications as the publisher offers them, but study the listed articles and paragraphs.

Where do I get the references legally?

Buy them from the publisher or an authorized seller, or use licensed copies from your employer. Avoid rehosted PDFs. If your employer has a standards subscription, ask whether you can use it for exam study.

Can I take notes into the exam?

No. Papers, notes and books are not allowed in the room. You get scratch paper and a pencil from the test center, and the open-book part uses on-screen PDFs of the listed sections. Practice with that in mind.
