API 570 Piping Inspector Salary and Jobs

API 570 piping inspector jobs sit wherever process piping runs: refineries, chemical plants, power and pulp sites, and the inspection firms that serve them. BLS publishes no pay figure for API 570 holders, so this page gives you the closest public number, labeled for what it is, and shows how to read a posting so you can price your own offer.

What the API 570 certification is used for

API 570 is the certification for in-service piping inspection. Employers use it to name the person who can plan piping inspections, evaluate thickness readings, judge repairs and alterations and sign the records. In a posting it shows up as a requirement, a preference or a milestone after hire. The certification does not set your pay by itself. It changes which roles you qualify for and how strong your case is when you ask for the senior ones.

Who hires API 570 inspectors

  • Refineries and chemical plants. Owner-user sites keep inspection teams for process piping, and the piping inspector often shares a group with the vessel and tank inspectors.
  • Inspection and engineering firms. Contract companies place inspectors at client sites for turnarounds, projects and routine in-service inspection.
  • Power, pulp and manufacturing plants. Steam, condensate and process lines need the same inspection planning on a smaller footprint, often with one inspector covering several equipment types.
  • Insurers and jurisdictional offices. Some oversight and insurance inspection groups cover piping alongside boilers and vessels.

The same work goes by many names, so search more than one:

  • Piping inspector
  • API 570 inspector
  • Authorized piping inspector
  • Mechanical integrity inspector or engineer
  • Stationary equipment inspector
  • Inspection specialist

Add "API 570" as a keyword, then read the qualifications section. A "mechanical integrity" role may be mostly records and planning, and an "equipment inspector" role may be mostly field work. Check which equipment the duties name: piping points to 570, vessels to API 510, tanks to 653.

Pay: the public data

The closest BLS occupation. BLS has no occupation for piping inspectors. The nearest inspection occupation in its tables is SOC 47-4011, Construction and Building Inspectors. In May 2025 OEWS data (released 15 May 2026), it shows a national mean wage of $37.37 an hour and $77,730 a year, and a median of $35.91 an hour, across 146,720 jobs. Source: BLS Table 1, National Employment and Wage Data, May 2025.

This is a benchmark, not an API 570 salary. The occupation covers building and construction inspection, and the data do not isolate refinery piping inspectors or credential holders. Quote the occupation name next to the number if you use it.

What BLS leaves out. The OEWS definitions exclude overtime, on-call pay, shift differentials and meal and lodging payments. Turnaround and contract work often pays on those terms, so an offer's total earnings can sit well away from the BLS base-pay figure in either direction. For government-posted examples of boiler and pressure vessel inspector pay, see our pressure vessel inspector salary guide.

Why offers for the same title differ

Record these separately for every posting, so offers compare cleanly:

  • Base rate or salary, and whether it is hourly or annual.
  • Overtime terms and the hours the role really runs.
  • Per diem and travel pay, and how often you travel.
  • Contract or staff. Contract roles often trade benefits and stability for rate. Staff roles trade rate for steadier hours and benefits.
  • Region and site. Location and the type of plant change both pay and workload.
  • Scope. Whether you inspect, plan, supervise or sign off.

How API 570 fits the path

Most people reach 570 from fabrication, repair, operations or inspection work on piping. Eligibility pairs your education with documented experience, and the API 570 requirements and cost guide lists the routes, the fees and the next exam windows from API's pages. Once certified, the common next steps are a lead or supervisory inspector role, a mechanical integrity or planning role, or a second certification. If vessels are in your plant too, which exam to take first helps you sequence 570 and 510.

Before you spend study time, ask the employer whether they require the credential, pay for the exam or tie a raise or promotion to it. That answer tells you what the certification is worth in your own pay conversation.

FAQ

How much does an API 570 inspector make?

There is no public BLS figure for API 570 holders. The closest BLS occupation, SOC 47-4011, shows a May 2025 national mean of $77,730 a year and a median of $35.91 an hour, and it excludes overtime and per diem. Your offer depends on employer, region, contract or staff status and hours.

Do I need API 570 to get a piping inspector job?

Not always. Some postings require it, some prefer it and some give you time to earn it after you start. Ask the hiring manager what they expect.

Is API 570 or API 510 better for jobs?

Jobs follow the equipment you inspect. Piping roles ask for 570 and vessel roles ask for 510. Many plants want both, and the comparison guide shows how they differ.

Does API 570 get travel work?

Contract inspection often travels for outages and projects. Owner-user roles stay at one plant. Read the travel line in each posting.
