API 510 Exam Prep Course: What to Look For Before You Buy
A good API 510 exam prep course teaches the methods, drills them with original questions that explain every answer, runs timed practice that matches the exam's two parts, and is written to the editions on API's current effectivity sheet. A weak one is a list of questions with letters beside them. Use the seven checks below on any course you're considering, ours included, and compare what you'd pay on the same terms.
Check 1: Is it written to the Body of Knowledge?
API publishes the Body of Knowledge for each window, listing the topics questions are drawn from. A course should map its lessons and its score report to those five sections: thickness and integrity calculations, welding procedure review, nondestructive examination, general practical knowledge and specific practical knowledge. Our Body of Knowledge guide explains each. If a course can't show you its coverage by section, you can't tell what it leaves out.

Which hydrotest situation carries the highest brittle fracture risk?

Check 2: Does it match the current editions?
The exam is based on the editions on the effectivity sheet for your window, even where your plant uses a different one. A course built on older editions can teach you a paragraph number that has moved. Ask which edition each lesson cites and when the course was last updated.
Check 3: Are the questions original?
API's Code of Conduct, on its applications page, has candidates agree not to reproduce or disclose exam content, and API can cancel results or deny certification for a violation. A course that advertises recalled test items is asking you to take that risk. Look for questions written to the published Body of Knowledge, with a statement of how the answer keys were checked.
Check 4: Does every answer come with an explanation?
An explanation should say why the right option is right, why each wrong one is wrong, and which section the answer relies on. That last part matters because the open-book part rewards finding paragraphs. A course that gives only the letter trains you to recognize answers, not to find them.
Check 5: Does it run timed practice like the exam?
The real exam is 170 questions: 110 closed-book in 2.75 hours, a 45-minute break, then 60 open-book in 3.75 hours. Pacing differs sharply between the parts, at 1.5 minutes per closed-book question and 3.75 per open-book question. Look for timed exams that split the same way, and for a score by section afterward. Our course includes two timed practice exams with a closed-book part, an optional 45-minute break and an open-book part.
Check 6: Can you see price, access and refund terms plainly?
Write down, for each option, what you pay, how long access lasts, whether anything renews and what the refund rule is. The API 510 exam fee is $875 for members and $1,125 for non-members in 2026, and $890 and $1,140 in 2027, so a prep purchase that misses the mark is money on top of a fee you may pay twice. Our study options comparison sets these out side by side with each seller's own figures, read on 22 October 2026.
Here is where Long Seam sits. The course is $199, paid once, with 401 questions, 8 lessons, 6 worked calculations, a study plan, two timed practice exams and lifetime access. If your exam is days away, a 7-day pass is $39. Nothing renews. Refund terms are in our terms.
Check 7: Does it promise a result?
No course can. API sets passing scores by equating across exam forms, and individual results depend on your preparation, experience and the day. Walk away from any seller promising a pass. A seller that says what the course does and doesn't do is easier to trust.
A quick way to judge a course before paying
Run this test with a free sample from any vendor:
- Answer ten items and note whether the explanations cite section numbers.
- Check one section number against your own copy.
- See whether the score report splits by Body of Knowledge section.
Then run the same test on the free 10-question check at /api-510. It takes a few minutes and needs no signup. If a vendor offers no free sample, that tells you something too.
Also plan for what a course can't do. It can't replace your own copies of the references, because the open-book part requires you to find paragraphs in them. Budget for the publications on the effectivity sheet alongside the course, and see the requirements and cost guide for the full cost picture, including the application. If your plan is time-limited, read the 30, 60 and 90 day study plan too. Dates and deadlines are in the exam schedule and fees guide. The next window is 2 to 22 January 2027, with an application deadline of 29 October 2026.

FAQ
Do I need an API 510 prep course to pass?
No. Some inspectors self-study from the references and the Body of Knowledge. A course helps most if you want structured lessons, explained practice and a timed rehearsal.
How much does an API 510 prep course cost?
Prices vary widely, from about $20 for a short access window to about $1,000 for instructor-led training, based on the sellers' pages read on 22 October 2026. Compare price, access length and refund rules, not just the headline figure.
Does API endorse any prep course?
No. API's policies say it does not endorse test preparation classes, courses or companies. Any claim of API backing should make you cautious.
What should I buy first, a course or the code books?
Buy the references on the effectivity sheet first, since every course assumes you have them. Then add a course or question bank for practice.
