API 510 certification: requirements, total cost and how long it takes

API 510 certification starts with qualifying work experience. Before choosing a preparation course, check which education route fits you, document your pressure-vessel work and build a budget around your intended exam window. Study time is only one part of the timeline.

API 510 exam requirements

✓ API's qualification page gives these minimum combinations:

  • Engineering or technology bachelor's degree or higher, or at least three years of technical military service: one year performing or supervising API 510 inspection activities.
  • Two-year engineering or technology associate degree or certificate, or two years of technical military service: two years of relevant vessel work, including one year performing or supervising inspection.
  • High-school diploma or equivalent: three years of relevant vessel work, including one year performing or supervising inspection.
  • No formal education: five or more years of relevant vessel work, including one year performing or supervising inspection.

✓ Relevant vessel work covers design, fabrication, repair, operation or inspection. Experience must fall within the previous ten years and be acquired while employed by, or contracted to, an authorized inspection agency under API 510. Dishonorable discharge disqualifies military-service credit. API verifies the experience documented in your application. These routes refer to API 510 Appendix B; consult API's page for the full eligibility table.

Pressure vessel inspector qualifications therefore depend on duties and dates, not just a job title. Make a work-history checklist showing employers, dates, vessel duties and inspection responsibilities. Identify who can verify each period. If your degree, military role or inspection arrangement does not clearly fit a row, check it with API before choosing a paid course or exam application.

Build the total certification cost

✓ API's fee page shows initial fees of $875 member / $1,125 non-member in its first fee panel and $890 / $1,140 in its second. Our exam schedule and fees guide records these as the 2026 and 2027 panels in page order. The tables lack their own year labels, so confirm the charge for your application before paying.

There is no single verified total for every candidate. Use this budget worksheet with actual quotes:

  • API initial fee: the amount confirmed for your application and membership category.
  • Authorized references: books or authorized access you still need after checking employer-provided materials.
  • Preparation: any optional course, practice product or other study support you choose.
  • Attendance: transport, lodging and meals where needed, plus any unpaid time away from work.
  • Contingency: applicable appointment-change, application or repeat-attempt costs.

For example, using the second panel's non-member fee, your planned total is $1,140 plus references, optional preparation and attendance costs. That is a calculation framework, not a quoted package price. Subtract confirmed employer reimbursement separately so the full cost and your personal share remain visible.

✓ API lists a $200 late-application fee and $350 reschedule-application fee. Neither is an automatic addition to every candidate's budget. The schedule and fees guide explains these alongside the separate Prometric appointment-change charges. Check the applicable policy before treating any one fee as the complete price of postponing.

How long does API 510 certification take?

Separate the timeline into qualifying experience, application preparation, study and certification processing. The experience requirement is measured in years. Once you qualify, your pace depends on your existing knowledge, available study hours, application completeness and the window you can attend.

As a planning exercise, reserve eight weeks with several consistent study sessions each week, then adjust after a diagnostic. This is our suggested starting schedule, not an API requirement or a prediction that eight weeks will be enough. Shift work, unfamiliar calculations or missing references may require more time.

✓ API policy makes an application valid for six months from the first exam date requested. The period does not restart with each attempt. Certification also waits until application deficiencies are cleared, even after a passing result. Do not promise an employer a certificate date based only on an exam appointment.

Processing time to check: API's cited policy does not establish a fixed end-to-end approval time for your circumstances. Check the application guidance and your ICP Portal status before making work or travel commitments.

Turn the requirements into a study plan

Use the Body of Knowledge to organize preparation around calculations, welding qualification review, nondestructive examination and general and specific inspection knowledge. Record whether each weakness concerns a method, a concept or locating a reference.

The Body of Knowledge guide explains that structure; the effectivity-sheet guide helps match editions to your window. Use those reference identifiers with your own authorized publications. A preparation purchase does not replace the experience requirement.

Try the API 510 diagnostic to choose your first study priorities, then return to the Long Seam overview for the preparation sequence.
